Sousou no Frieren, or Frieren the Slayer, is a great anime. I wouldn’t say that it’s one of my favourite shows of all time but it is worth watching. Some of my favourite scenes in the show are when Frieren looks back on her time with Himmel and it shows how Himmel has been able to leave a lasting impact on Frieren despite the short time they spent together relative to the length of Frieren’s life. They were the scenes that resonated the most with me and are what make in my mind, Himmel the best character in the show.
Episode 12, A Fake Hero
Himmel was unable to pull the Hero’s sword from the stone. The Hero’s sword was the symbol of the Hero and it was said that the person who was able to pull the sword from the stone would be able to defeat the Demon King. I love Himmel’s reaction to not being able to pull out the sword. He is so damn cool. This scene resonated with me because it questions what is real and what is illusory.
Episode 27, The Beauty of Magic
Frieren’s favourite spell creates a field of flowers and it was through that spell, that Himmel chose Frieren as the mage that he wanted in his party. I love this scene because it shows that you can leave a profound impact on someone in moments where you perform a small action, in this case, Frieren casting a spell.
“Every man is a world unto himself.” - Virtuous Sons
And so, through a small act of kindness, we can leave a lasting impression upon an entire world.
Episode 22, To Be Known By Others
The following scene also echoes the sentiment of changing someone’s life in small ways. While I do not agree with Himmel’s sentiment that our life’s purpose is to be known and remembered by others, I do think we are remembered by those we are able to change, even in small ways.
